Napo Wildlife Centre, Amazon, Ecuador

A beautiful lodge located in a tributary of the Napo river deep in the Amazon, The Napo Wildlife Centre offers the visitor an authentic Amazon experience. The only lodge in the area to be located within the Yasuni National Park, guests will have the opportunity to explore the creek where the lodge is based and surrounding areas with dedicated naturalist guides where they will see monkeys, toucans, kingfishers and an array of other wildlife and birdlife in their natural habitat. There is also a parrot lick nearby. The lodge is small with 10 spacious and comfortable cabanas all equipped with verandas and stunning views out to the Amazon. There is also a 50 ft high viewing tower.
Our opinion
This is a lodge that makes its guests feel welcome. The Napo Wildlife Centre involves its guests in the spectacular Amazon surroundings from the moment they enter the boat that goes down the Napo river en-route to their accommodation. The hotel is staffed by the local Anangu community who helped create the lodge as part of an eco-project. Guests may like to know that the profits from the Centre go back to the community and into rainforest conservation.
Quito & surroundings
Quito, the capital of Ecuador, resides high in the Andes at 2,850m above sea level, tempting visitors with even higher peaks. It is flanked by the active Pichincha volcano, accessible via cable car. Its primary attraction is a beautifully preserved historic quarter, where grand colonial-era churches and the presidential palace are all situated within a dozen square blocks of narrow streets and various public squares. Further north are Quito's best parks and a new botanical garden, while to the east is the trendy, bohemian community of Guapulo and its spectacular views down to the other valley. Also within an hour of downtown is the Middle of the World monument, right on the international Equator line.
Amazon Rainforst
Ecuador's lower Amazon basin, including the treasured YasuniNational Park, features highly biodiverse jungle rainforest. Sustainable tourism projects, such as the Napo Wildlife Center on the banks of the Añangu blackwater lagoon, can be reached via plane and boat along the Napo river (or Pastaza/Tigre rivers). There are also two cruise
boats offering non-stop comforts and convenience. Even more numerous than the waterways are the countless species of birds and frogs, visible on day or night tours. Other abundant delights include giant plants, unique flowers, tortoises and monkeys. If human nature is of interest, tribes such as the Shuar and Huaorani are open to
outsiders.
Ecuador's relatively tiny patch of the Amazon offers many lifetimes discovery.
