Life enriching moments
This is the world’s first ICEHOTEL and we’ve made it our mission to create life enriching experiences, in Jukkasjärvi and beyond. The walls, floors and ceilings of the hotel are the canvases of designers from all creative disciplines. The artists and art work vary from year to year, each rendition of the hotel presenting an ephemeral collection.

The hotel melts and returns to Mother Nature in spring.
The concept Icehotel 365 makes the sleeping-on-ice experience available to combine with fall and summer adventures as well as the classic winter excursions. The interior hold the same standard and visual design as the winter structure. The exterior in winter will have the same shape and look as the adjacent winter structure, and in summer, the arched roof will be covered in grass.

Warm room - Nordic Chalet

Our Nordic chalets sleeps four people and have two bedrooms, a kitchenette and simple lounge area, ideal for family or friends sharing. The décor is calm and classic Scandinavian, with white-washed wooden panel walls, birch wood details, heated tiled floors and shades of natural shades of grey, white and brown. The apartment is spacious with two bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with a bunk bed, and sleeps four. There is also a small lounge and kitchenette and heated tiled flooring in the hallway, lounge and bedrooms. Be joined together in magic

Share your love with family and friends in an intimate Arctic wedding in Jukkasjärvi. The unique location, the ice, the snow and the almost unreal surroundings at Icehotel leave no one indifferent and there are plenty of options for your ceremony.

Reincarnated in a new fashion every winter, the crisp Ice Church and Icehotel’s majestic main hall are truly unforgettable venues. The ephemeral nature of the ice church adds to the sensation – when no architectural memento exists, the memories and the vows exchanged are especially cherished. For a countryside wedding, opt for the rustic Jukkasjärvi village church, dating back to the 1600’s. Or, why not a romantic ceremony in the wild, promising each other eternal love against a breath-taking backdrop of rivers, mountains and forests. You can also get a beautiful contrast and the best of two worlds during the summer months with a wedding amidst pristine natural ice inside Icehotel 365, followed by a reception in the warm summer sun.

Icehotel offers a wedding consultation service, so we can help with the planning and practical preparations to ensure your day is truly magical. Planning time varies from a few months to a couple of years. We recommend that you contact us well before it’s time.

The Ice Church

Our Ice Church returns to the river in spring, but love is eternal. Reborn in a new guise each winter and hand carved by carefully select designers, it is ephemeral and one of the most unique wedding locations that you can find. The church opens December 26 every year and stays open until April when it begins to melt back into the river. The ice church is an intimate venue, accommodating around 35-40 people, with walls and ceiling made of snow and the altar details and benches are made of pristine natural ice. The church is also very suitable for those considering to re-new their vows or a solemn blessing ceremony. If you would prefer a civil ceremony, then the hand-carved art suites or the majestic Main Hall in Icehotel make for spectacular venues.

Celebrations – reception & dinner

Whether you’re planning a secret escape or a festive gathering of family and friends, a celebratory evening is in place. Think champagne, delicious food and custom-made blocks of ice with your names and date engraved adorning the tables.

Icehotel Restaurant serves local delicacies like Kalix Bleak Roe, Arctic Char, reindeer and wild berries, prepared by the Michelin-trained head chef and his team in classic continental style. The historic Mommas-room is secluded from the main restaurant and ideal for private parties of up to 30 people.

The Old Homestead, dating back to the 1700’s, is located ten minutes walk from Icehotel. Expect to devour local traditional food and organic wine in front of the warm glow of candles and the roaring open fire.

The wedding night

What could be more romantic than spending your first night as a married couple on a bed of crystal clear ice and soft reindeer skins? Don’t worry about the cold; we got warm polar expedition sleeping bags from Haglöfs – even bags especially made for two.

After a long and joyful day celebrating your love with friends and family an unforgettable night awaits, perhaps the northern lights are dancing in the night sky above you or the midnight sun is glowing when you retreat to your suite. Each suite in Icehotel is a work of art – individually designed and hand carved masterpieces of ephemeral creativity and an experience like no other.

Icehotel offers a variety of room categories from luxury suites down to straightforward ice rooms as well as warm accommodation. As always, breakfast, sauna, loan of warm outer clothing and complimentary entry to Icehotel throughout your stay are included.  Read more about our rooms here.

Summer and fall weddings

The Arctic summer and fall landscapes are equally, if not more spectacular than winter. The snow is gone and the 24-hour daylight spawns an intense explosion of green in June. Come late August and September, the landscape is transformed into a cascade of red and orange, and as the nights get darker, the northern lights start making their reappearance.

Our wedding consultation service can help you plan an Arctic wedding year-round. Marry under the magical glow of the midnight sun or in the charming and historic Jukkasjärvi village church, Lapland’s oldest, dating back to the 1600’s. Or get the best of two worlds with a crisp wedding ceremony amongst pristine natural ice inside Icehotel 365 followed by a reception in the warm summer sun – a nice contrast and an element of winter in the height of summer.

Picture of Summer at ICEHOTEL - 24 hours daylight

Summer at ICEHOTEL - 24 hours daylight

The harsh winter losens its grip of the Torne River and the seasonal winter hotel slowly makes its way back to mother nature. We greet the return of the light and from mid May till mid July we experience the Midnight Sun with twenty-four hour daylight and the intensity of the Arctic summer.

The Arctic Summer

Never ending days, lush green wilderness and wild rivers – the Arctic summer is truly remarkable. Hike the hills around Jukkasjärvi for spectacular views over Torne River and feel the vibrant energy around you. Birds are singing, the water is purling and the treetops whispers softly in the wind. Step inside the world of winter – Icehotel 365, and behold the crystal clear ice, a piece of the river frozen in time, illuminated by the golden rays from the midnight sun that shines through the cathedral-like tinted window. The Arctic summer in Jukkasjärvi is a must to experience.

The Midnight Sun

Summertime in Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometers above the Arctic Circle, means 24-hour daylight. As the sun never sets, the nights are as bright as the days between mid May and mid July. The midnight sun invites you to stay up late and bathe in its golden light, perhaps between invigorating sauna sessions or a Torne River boat tour that finishes off with kokkaffe (boiled coffee in a kettle) served in a wooden cup, made over an open fire on the riverbank.

Hiking

Hiking is a trending activity and suitable for everyone from kids to athletes. The forests surrounding Icehotel and the slightly hilly terrain is perfect for the inexperienced hikers that wants to enjoy fresh air, great views and stroll through Europe’s northernmost pine moors, which nestles the remnants of the Leppäkoski mine dating back to the 1600’s. Kiruna city is only a short 20-minute trip away from Icehotel and offers interesting walks up on the old mines. The mountain Luossavaara has a ski slope in the winter and a hiking trail during summer – the Midnight Sun Trail, with spectacular views over Kiruna and the mine. More challenging trails can be found within a mere hour from the vicinity of Kiruna. Sweden’s highest peak Kebnekaise 2,104 m (6,903 ft) is snow-clad year round and the Tarfala glacier can be found in the same area. They are part of the Scandinavian Mountains and form the border between Sweden and Norway in the north, where you can find more hiking trails with different difficulty levels and breathtaking landscapes like taken out of a fantasy novel.

Torne River activities

Icehotel’s mother, Torne River, is now in its fluid form and stretches all the way from the Scandinavian Mountains in the north and connects with the sea in the Bothnian Bay further south. On its way it passes Jukkasjärvi and the riverbank where the seasonal Icehotel is built every winter with transparent blocks of ice from the river in its frozen state. The open water is perfect for different water activities such as Stand Up Paddle, canoeing and river rafting. You can rent your own equipment and play in the fresh water or follow an experienced guide who will show you the ropes. Our wilderness guides are also experts on the fishing waters around Jukkasjärvi and Icehotel. Stay in a rustic, timbered cabin, enjoy a wood fired sauna and catch trout or grayling straight from the river.

Life enriching moments year-round

Icehotel 365, the year-round ice experience, the preserved winter world, makes for an intriguing contrast between seasons in the height of summer. Stay in a preciously hand carved Art Suite made out of ice and snow, or splurge on a Deluxe Suite with a perhaps even more intricate and detailed ice art that also comes with a private warm bathroom, which has a luxuriously designed relax area, shower or bathtub. Sip a drink from ice glasses in Icebar, which also is located inside Icehotel 365 and unleash your creativity in an ice sculpting class where you chisel your own art out of the frozen Torne River ice. The ephemeral nature of the material and the combination of a liquid and solid river creates a magical atmosphere – a setting for life enriching moments year-round.

Welcome to Icehotel and Jukkasjärvi!

Picture of Nature’s pantry and Sámi dinner

Nature’s pantry and Sámi dinner

Welcome to spend the afternoon in the nature. We pick berries and plants and learn about how they are used in Sàmi everyday life. We end the day with a Sámi-inspired dinner where we get to taste our own berries and plants.

Our Sámi guide will take us to the countryside to collect berries and plants, depending on the season. We learn about how they have been used, and still are used, in the Sámi tradition and we learn more about plants, nature and wildlife in the area.

The coffee will be served out in the nature, by an open fire, and at the end of the day we go to the restaurant for dinner. The chef will meet up and take care of our collected pantry. Based on what we have found the kitchen prepares a sometimes innovative, sometimes traditional meal.

If you bring your camera our Sámi photo guide will help you take pictures from the tour.

In Swedish Lapland, the sauna is the heart of the home, a place for peacefulness, relaxation and meditation. ”Kallebastun”, Jukkasjärvi Culture Sauna, is the cradle of the Swedish Sauna Academy, and was made an institution by enthusiast Kalle Grundberg. Now our own “Sauna Master” Andreas Hermansson has created a ten-step sauna ritual where you gain the skills to sauna like a Scandinavian.

Midnight Sun

The midnight  sun – what’s that like? This is a question we struggle to answer. Because how can the midnight  sun be explained in words?

We can show you!

The midnight sun shines bright during 100 days and nights. On this tour we visit our nearest city Kiruna, which is moving due to the iron ore mine that was the reason the city got built.

We visit iconic places famous for their architecture and often featured in books and films. The tour finishes at the top of Mount Luossavaara where you have a stunning 360 view over the city, mountains and mine.

“- everything the midnight sun touches is our Lapish Kingdom”.

We meet you at the hotel, and drive you, by car, to our starting point. Here you will get acquainted with the camera and practice some photographing in order to be well prepared to take good pictures of landscape, animals and local culture during the tour.

When we feel confident with the camera we go in search of photo objects. We choose our objects depending on the weather and the sami eight seasons. We can never guarantee you pictures of for example wild animals, but we will search for good nature sceneries, sneak up on arctic animals like moose, reindeer and birds and search for possibilities to photograph local people or places. The tour ends with a cup of coffee or tea.

Hotel Description

About ICEHOTEL

Icehotel – a world famous hotel and an art exhibition made of ice and snow. Founded in 1989, it is reborn in a new guise every winter, in the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi – 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. The Torne River, the arts, and creating a setting for life-enriching moments are at the heart of it all.

This winter season there is big news— a whole new ice experience to be enjoyed alongside our classic Icehotel experience. ICEHOTEL 365 is a permanent structure that will include luxury suites, each with private relax and bathroom, and art suites, all sculptured by selected artists. As well as a large ice bar that serves champagne, and an ice gallery. This ice experience can be visited year-round and is cooled by solar panels during the summer months.

The Torne River

With its impressive length of 520 kilometers, it runs from the ancient mountains in the west down to the coast in the east, where it f lows out into the Bay of Bothnia. As the largest of Sweden’s four national rivers it is rare – indeed, unique. One of the last untouched rivers in Europe. A wild river.

It’s the Torne River that provides Icehotel with its ice in winter – and in the summer when the hotel melts, the water returns to its source. Natural ice requires a lot of work – before it is harvested in the very beginning of spring, when it has grown its thickest, months are devoted to maintaining the “ice field” and keeping it clear of snow so that the ice can have the best possible conditions for growth. But in Jukkasjärvi, people think that the natural Arctic ice is worth the effort. “For us the natural beauty and unique story of each individual block of ice provides inspiration that can never be found in artificial ice,” says Petra W Lindh, who has been working at Icehotel for 20 years.

Hearts beat for art

When the first snow has sprinkled the whole of Jukkasjärvi with white, artists from all over the world come together in the village to take part in creating the art exhibition of snow, ice and light that makes up Icehotel.

“Icehotel is an art symposium in a class of its own. The energy released here when creative people from a wide variety of backgrounds and places meet the ice is almost tangible,” says Arne Bergh, partner and sculptor who’s been part of Icehotel since the start.

Icehotel is all about ice and creativity – with art as the result. That’s why the artists invited to take part are not required to have worked with ice before – they’re selected from among those who send in their ideas based on originality and creating it in real natural ice would pose a new challenge. Each year some 40 artists are taking part in Icehotel. The notion that several weeks’ hard work and months of planning and preparation culminate in something that only exists for a few months is in some respects a bittersweet feeling.
