Restaurants

Picture of Restaurant SaporDivino | Grand Hotel Continental

Restaurant SaporDivino | Grand Hotel Continental

In the Sapordivino restaurant, located in the splendid Sale Gori, the elegance of the furnishings and the excellence of service create an exquisite, refined atmosphere. Here, chef Luca Ciaffarafà interprets the traditional Tuscan cuisine in his own unique way; his enticing menu blends ancient recipes with contemporary taste, to tell the gastronomic history of the region.

With its extreme simplicity, Sienese cuisine contains all the finest Tuscan flavours and ingredients. Its style, simple but refined, is strongly influenced by history and geography. The dishes are based on local farm products, including meat of native breeds and an exceptional olive oil.

This is how sublime dishes are created, such as lightly-smoked Carpaccio of Cinta Senese ham, finest Chianina beef marinated in powdered liquorice and balsamic vinegar, bitter orange Capocollo of Cinta with tarragon zabaione, Pappa al Pomodoro, a thick tomato soup served with a basil foam and caramelised tomatoes, and Medici salad with pecorino, anchovies and olives.

Highlights

In addition to an inviting menu, the restaurant offers its discerning historical environments of great sophistication

Enoteca | Grand Hotel Continental

The Sapordivino Wine Bar La Corte, located in the charming courtyard of the Palazzo, is a delightful yet informal setting that invites guests to enjoy an aperitif, such as the signature "Vin Santo Swing" accompanied by a fried cantuccino biscuit, a cocktail or an elegant after-dinner drink. Guests are served by expert staff in a quiet, relaxing setting and can also choose to have their meals served here by the restaurant.

The Sapordivino wine cellar is located at the base of a recently rediscovered medieval tower, one of the most fascinating parts of the hotel. Its thick stone walls, dating back to the 13th century, house a vast collection of fine wine labels. It's the perfect place to visit for anyone wishing to enter the world of superb Tuscan wine and a perfect place to host events in a unique setting.

Highlights

The Enoteca is located at the base of the medieval tower of the palace, discovered not too many years ago.

Picture of The Chef | Grand Hotel Continental

The Chef | Grand Hotel Continental

Chef Luca Ciaffarafà, originally from Tuscany, has begun to juggle with the art of cooking as a child, in his grandparents' restaurant, to stay later totally fascinated about gastronomy.

Its gastronomic culture expresses its deep link with Tuscany and its typical products, a base for every recipe that tends to exalt the excellence of the area in a modern way.

In his kitchen, traditional flavors and simple dishes of the past are in fact reinterpreted with taste and creativity to satisfy even the most demanding palates with dishes that, while being unique, pay homage to its regional roots.

About

See Tuscany from above, traveling 500m in the air aboard a hot air balloon, and experience the magic flight of a lifetime. The balloon moves like a large silent sailboat, moving with the wind and giving you a sense of liberation as well as a 360-degree view of the skies. If you dare to look down, you'll see the streets, rivers, and roads of the beautiful Tuscan landscape move past, more beautiful than any painter's vision.

You can fly in every season. Take off in the early morning, just after sunrise, and enjoy the scenery from on high, when the villages around you are still asleep. Meet your fellow participants at the meeting point. The pilot will check you in at the meeting point, then he will determine the direction and the strength of the wind and establish a take off point, that is usually within 4-5 km from where you are. Get on a jeep to reach the take off point, where you will see the crew preparing for take off, mounting and inflating the balloon. You will also be given a safety instructions leaflet.

The flight is usually 40-60 minutes long, but please allow around 3.5 hours for the whole experience (it includes the check-in and take off preparation operations, a toast at the end of the flight, and check-out and landing operations). You can't determine the exact route of the balloon because the pilot can't change the direction, but only follow the wind direction. he can raise or lower the hot air balloon by controlling the temperature inside the balloon. You will reach 500 m high (1500 ft), but also fly as high as the top of the trees. You can't predict the exact point of landing! It can be some green grass or a corn field! This is why every flight is unique and it is worth sharing with your friends or family. Finish off your experience with a special breakfast with the other participants, before coming back with a jeep.

Hotel Description

Hotel

Within walking distance from Piazza del Campo in Siena, Grand Hotel Continental - Starhotels Collezione is the only 5-star luxury hotel in the city's historic center.

Forced by the intellectuals of the Grand Tour during the nineteenth century, the Hotel has over the time crossed the history of Siena and of Italy all the way to today where, after careful restorations, it was brought back to its ancient seventeenth-century splendor.

Over 5 centuries of history in an ancient noble palace

The Grand Hotel Continetal in Siena is located in Palazzo Gori Pannilini, built around 1501 on pre-existing buildings and presumably realized in the present form by Pope Alexander VII, a member of the powerful Chigi family, as a wedding gift for his niece Olimpia and noble Giulio de Gori in 1677.

Set in the historic center of Siena, this beautiful noble palace totally reflects Renaissance architecture and is embellished with magnificent frescoes and rich decorations brought to light with various restorations.

Siena's Residence of the Queen of Italy Margherita of Savoy and a favorite destination of the intellectuals involved in the Grand Tour during the nineteenth century, the Grand Hotel Continetal has always attracted the international elite for its glamor and its privileged location within walking distance from Piazza del Campo, becoming the first and only luxury 5 star hotel in the city of Siena in 2002.

Elegance A magnificent private residence in the center of Siena

The Grand Hotel Continental astonishes by its architectural magnificence, the numerous Renaissance art and the beautiful original frescoes.

The splendor of the interior spaces, embellished with invaluable antiques and terracotta floors, beautifully marked by 500 years of aristocratic footsteps, making it a refined and luxurious place to stay to discover the treasures of Siena.

Each of the 51 rooms and suites is a masterpiece inspired by the nobility of the sixteenth century, whose elegance is able to satisfy the expectations of the modern traveler by catapulting it into a sumptuous private residence with the services of a 5 star luxury hotel.

A Renaissance jewel embedded in the walls of Siena

Located in the heart of Siena's historic center, the Grand Hotel Continetal combines the services of a luxury hotel with the atmosphere of a historic home.

The view over the city and some of the most evocative monuments of Siena, such as the Duomo and the church of San Domenico, create a memorable setting. From the Hotel, Piazza del Campo can be reached in a few minutes, being one of the most suggestive places in Siena, home of the famous Palio. Walking along the serene stone medieval streets, you can quickly reach the main architectural, artistic and historical monuments as well as an unbelievable array of local specialty shops, restaurants and bars.

Siena, A Step back to Medieval Tuscany

Siena

Siena is likely Italy's loveliest medieval city, and a trip worth making even if you are in Tuscany for just a few days. Siena's heart is its central piazza known as Il Campo, known worldwide for the famous Palio run here, a horse race run around the piazza two times every summer. Movie audiences worldwide can see Siena and the Palio in the James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace.

Siena is said to have been founded by Senius, son of Remus, one of the two legendary founders of Rome thus Siena's emblem is the she-wolf who suckled Remus and Romulus - you'll find many statues throughout the city. The city sits over three hills with its heart the huge piazza del Campo, where the Roman forum used to be. Rebuilt during the rule of the Council of Nine, a quasi-democratic group from 1287 to 1355, the nine sections of the fan-like brick pavement of the piazza represent the council and symbolizes the Madonna's cloak which shelters Siena.

The Campo is dominated by the red Palazzo Pubblico and its tower, Torre del Mangia. Along with the Duomo of Siena, the Palazzo Pubblico was also built during the same period of rule by the Council of Nine. The civic palace, built between 1297 and 1310, still houses the city's municipal offices much like Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Its internal courtyard has entrances to the Torre del Mangia and to the Civic Museum. If you feel energetic, a climb up the over 500 steps will reward you with a wonderful view of Siena and its surroundings. The Museum, on the other hand, offers some of the greatest of Sienese paintings. The Sala del Concistoro houses one of Domenico Beccafumi's best works, ceiling frescoes of allegories on the virtues of Siena's medieval government. But it is the Sala del Mappamondo and the Sale della Pace that hold the palaces's highlights: Simone Martini's huge Maestà and Equestrian Portrait of Guidoriccio da Fogliano and Ambrogio Lorenzetti's Allegories of Good and Bad Government, once considered the most important cycle of secular paintings of the Middle Ages.
