Getting to COMO Cocoa Island

COMO Cocoa Island, known locally as Makunufushi, is located among South Malé’s coral atolls. Importantly, guests do not need seaplanes to access the island; it is just a 40-minute speedboat transfer from the international airport on Malé (the main island). In addition, COMO Cocoa Island is located in the opposite direction to the majority of resorts (concentrated in the North Malé atoll) and occupies a quieter, undisturbed area.

By Air

Due to the isolated nature of the Maldives, almost all travellers arrive by air. There is one international airport, situated on the island of Hulhulé, which is two kilometres across the water from the capital, Malé.

There are many scheduled and charter flights to the region. Providers change frequently according to the time of year and it is advisable to check with your local travel agent. There is also an international airport on the southern island of Gan. Gan is situated on the southernmost island of the Addu Atoll. From Malé, it takes approximately 70 minutes to fly to Gan.

Coral Propagation

Sponsor a coral propagating frame and help our resident marine biologist plant it on the seabed at COMO Cocoa Island’s coral garden. You will receive photographs and updates every six months after you have planted the frame, so you can watch your contribution to the Maldives’ ecosystem flourish.

Sunset Cruise

Wild dolphins migrate through the waters of South of Malé in pods of between 10 and 30. This excursion sets out in the evening, to where the dolphins swim playfully and jump out of the water to showcase their acrobatic skills spins. They may also come up close to surf the boat’s bow waves. On the way back to COMO Cocoa Island you can enjoy the sunset while sipping sparkling wine and nibbling on gourmet canapés.

Located at Maldives’ South Malé Atoll, COMO Cocoa Island enjoys a marine-rich lagoon full of pristine dive sites, such as the dramatic Kandooma Caves and the ever popular shark cleaning station at Cocoa Thila. Divers will discover reefs and overhangs teeming with marine life, including green turtles, reef sharks, bigeye trevally and many other colourful reef fish. Dive trip experiences may be enhanced by bringing along our resident marine biologist. To dive at COMO Cocoa Island you must hold an International SCUBA diving license, which you will be asked to provide with your logbook. We also offer a range of PADI-approved diving courses for those wishing to earn their SCUBA license while at the resort. Whale Shark Expedition and Picnic

This exciting trip begins with a speed boat ride across to the Ari Atoll, where our search for the largest shark in the ocean will begin. Once a whale shark has been spotted, guests are invited to snorkel alongside this gentle sea giant. At lunchtime we will stop on an uninhabited island to enjoy a picnic, before heading back out to continue the hunt.

Set out on COMO Cocoa Island’s sports fishing boat to put your fishing skills to the test. Travel between reefs accompanied by our experienced Maldivian crew and experience the thrill of fighting bluefin trevally, snappers and dog tooth tuna. REJUVENATING BODY TREATMENT

This treatment is inspired by the traditions of ancient philosophy. Dosha assessment, a process used to determine your body type, will be carried out prior to your treatment to ensure your needs are met. The treatment begins with an Abhyanga back massage using herbal oil. This will be followed by an exfoliation and the application of a herbal oil based mask. The process will be repeated on the front of your body, before concluding with a therapeutic facial and hydration massage.

This treatment has been developed specifically to provide tone and firmness to slack areas of skin. HYDROTHERAPY

The therapeutic use of water can be traced back over 6,000 years. Our nervous system reacts to the pressure exerted by moving water, while warm water soothes the body, calming the nerves, heart and lungs, and releases tension in the muscles. Accommodation

The style and design of our 33 overwater suites and villas are like that of no other luxury resort in the Maldives. Uniquely inspired by dhoni boats—the gently curving wooden vessels used by local fishermen—COMO Cocoa Island’s rooms arc out from the island itself. Simple wooden walkways built above the shallow lagoon connect them, forming a sinuous boardwalk pathway.

Each room has its own private terrace, all the better for slipping into the warm Maldivian sea, right from your room. The view from the wide platform is directly out to the watery expanse and horizon. Interiors are dominated by whites and blues, with only the subtlest nod to a certain local rustic aesthetic.

Passport and Visa Requirements

All travellers to Maldives must be in possession of a valid passport and travel documents. Visitors with this documentation will be issued with tourist visas on arrival, free of charge.

Visitors entering the Maldives should have return or onward travel tickets and a minimum of US$100, as well as US$50 per person per day of their intended stay. Alternatively, they may give proof of a confirmed hotel reservation for the full period of their stay in the country.

Tourist visas on arrival are for 30 days, but this can be extended to 90 days by applying to the immigration department.

There is no departure tax.

Prohibited Items

Please note that the Maldives is a Muslim country, and there are restrictions on items that can be brought into the country. These restrictions also apply to duty-free purchases, including alcohol.

Money and Banks

Local banking hours are Sunday to Thursday from 7.30am to 2.30pm, with ATMs widely available on Malé.

Most tourist destinations will accept all major credit cards (American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa).

The local currency is Maldivian Rufiya (MRF), which is comprised of 100 laari.
15.5 MVR is roughly equivalent to one US Dollar.

Health

Medical treatment in the Maldives can be very expensive and it is strongly recommended that travellers purchase comprehensive health insurance before their visit.

In case of diving emergencies, a decompression chamber is also accessible in Malé.

Electricity

The standard European non-grounded socket ( type C) is generally used in the Maldives. However, it is advisable to carry a plug adapter for appliances which do not fit into this socket.

Television

Cable TV is available on most islands. At COMO Cocoa Island, guests have access to satellite TV channels, video on demand, interactive information and music.

Telephones and Communication

Complimentary Wi-FI is provided throughout the resorts.

In general, mobile phone coverage is good on the islands, including COMO Cocoa Island. However, travellers should check their international roaming agreement with their mobile phone provider to avoid unexpected charges.

SIM cards can be bought in Malé in order to make cheap local calls.

The international dialing code for Maldives is +960.

Postal Service

MPL (Maldives Post Limited) provides a comprehensive postal service. Letters and cards take approximately seven to 10 days to reach international destinations.

Water

COMO Cocoa Island's tap water is safe for drinking. Additionally, complimentary bottled water is supplied to all villas and suites (freshly filtered using our reverse osmosis system), as well as sparkling water.

Tipping

Tipping is not customary in the Maldives and it is officially discouraged. However it is common practice to tip waiters and room staff at the resorts, gratuities for staff may be left at your discretion.

If a taxi is taken in Malé it is unnecessary to tip, as the fare is usually prepaid.

Dress

Please remember that the Maldives is a Muslim country. As a mark of respect, women are expected to keep their thighs and shoulders covered when away from the resorts.

Swimwear should be covered up in restaurants and bikinis are strictly prohibited outside of the resorts. Nudity is also prohibited.

Time Zone

Standard time in the Maldives is GMT (+5), and the country does not observe daylight savings. COMO Cocoa Island uses Island Time which is one hour ahead: GMT (+6), in order to allow guests more time in the sun.
