Picture of The Dining Room

The Dining Room

From the typically English to the totally cosmopolitan, Head Chef Simon Addison, Executive Head Chef Luke Matthews and their talented brigade create fine dining at its finest.

We’re not great at blowing our own trumpet, so we’ll let the judges at The Tatler Restaurant Awards do it for us. “The menu is utterly delicious and thankfully avoids the sometimes tortured ‘cleverness of country-hotel dining.”

And if you’re concerned about food miles, you won’t be disappointed to discover that many of the ingredients we use have travelled less than 100 yards from our own kitchen garden

Picture of The Kitchen

The Kitchen

This purpose-built space sets the stage for enjoying and learning about food and cooking. The design is open plan; bi-folding doors and glass panelling flood the rooms with light. Surrounding the building are raised beds and a greenhouse where herbs and vegetables are grown year-round to supply The Kitchen. The Kitchen is a feast for the senses. On any day you’ll find guests and visitors gathering for informal lunches or taking a cookery class, gardeners selecting fresh ingredients or chefs developing this season’s menu.

The Kitchen - Relaxed Dining

The Kitchen provides an informal dining experience with an open plan layout offering you the chance to watch the Chefs at work. The à la carte menu features wood-fired pizzas, gourmet burgers, superfood salads and much more.

Stroll through the garden into the cookery school and settle into the workstation that is exclusively yours for the day. Spend time seated around the Chef Tutor's station, where you will learn new skills before creating your own masterpiece under the watchful eye of the Chef. Day courses with our Chef Tutor run from 9.30am - 3.30pm. Prices start from £155 and include refreshments, lunch, all equipment and ingredients.

Picture of Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea

One of the great English traditions is of course afternoon tea. And where better to take it than in one of England’s very first country house hotels?

Named after the celebrated naval officer, Captain Marryat, our afternoon tea uses the loveliest of local ingredients and features sandwiches, cakes, scones, jams and teas that more than do Hampshire proud. (Although we’re happy to admit that our smoked salmon comes from the slightly further afield crystal clear waters of Scotland).

Afternoon tea is served between 3pm and 4.30pm in the restaurant, or in fine weather, on the terrace

Picture of Kitchen Garden

Kitchen Garden

As part of our ongoing commitment to local sourcing and ethical sustainability we take great pride in growing much of the fruit, vegetables and herbs we use in our kitchen, right here in Chewton Glen’s own garden.

Executive Head Chef, Luke Matthews consults regularly with Estate Manager, Darren Venables, advising him what type of seasonal produce he would like to serve in the restaurant. Our garden also acts as a supplier to a local company, Naked Jams, who make chutneys, jellies and jams which are served in the hotel and sold in our boutique.

At the back of our estate, there are a number of beehives whose five million occupants produce honey for the hotel. The added bonus is they pollinate the beautiful wildflowers that surround the house. (And you thought we only provided accommodation for discerning humans!)

We settle in quickly, knowing we can choose from a number of walks about the grounds or even head down to the beach 25 minutes away. Instead we take in the beauty of the New Forest from the comfort of our sofa and then, later, from the hot tub on the balcony.

In the evening we order a DVD, we request a pizza hamper for dinner with a selection of world beers – as is our breakfast hamper the next morning), we ask for some tea lights for the balcony

It’s a glorious, guilt-free way to indulge. And not a dinosaur in sight.

Picture of Time for Food

Time for Food

For half a century Chewton Glen has been wowing guests with unforgettable food and beverage. All ages will enjoy our take on classic typically English dishes alongside more modern creations.

The Dining Room is where some of Britain’s most famous chefs learnt their craft. It’s also where kids can enjoy breakfast and supper from 6pm to 8pm (last orders at 7pm). If parents wish to dine with their young children at this stage a full A la Carte menu is available.

During school holidays a children's buffet supper is served in The Lake Suite (from 6-7pm), children enjoy a buffet dinner for only £10.00 per child, with under 5s eating free of charge.

Or why not visit The Kitchen? The new place, to eat, meet, create and cook by James Martin.

We’re a family-owned hotel, and we know that rigid set meal times don’t always work. So we offer all-day family-friendly dining with a children’s menu and lounge menu available throughout the day.

Or, bring the fine cuisine to the comfort of your room or suite with 24-hour room service featuring a choice of drinks and nibbles, whether you’re absolutely ravenous or simply want an energy boost.

Head to Toe Pamper Party

One The world's 21 best treehouse hotels

Stay Over

Why not stay at home in the UK and enjoy a traditional holiday at Chewton Glen, our family hotel in Hampshire?

About Us

There are many magnificent hotels, but only a few of them can call themselves a true English Original.

Chewton Glen is a quintessentially English, privately owned luxury Country House Hotel & Spa on the fringe of the New Forest.

With some of England’s most stunning countryside rolling up around us and the calmness of the sea just moments away, Chewton Glen is an idyllic escape.

You wouldn't know we’re a mere two hours from London, easily reached by rail, air and road when you’re here, in such a tranquil setting. Christchurch, Bournemouth and Southampton are also nearby.

We’re full of the unexpected. Here are some more things you may not know about us:

There are 70 rooms and suites in total with 14 of them being luxury Treehouses, for a one-of-a-kind experience

We've got over 1800 wines on our famous wine list

In the 12th century the Chewton Glen estate was know as 'Cheventone', 'Chyveton' or 'Chewghton' and the first document mentioning the house appeared in 1732.

Captain Frederick Marryat used his visits here to write the enduring children's novel 'The Children of the New Forest'.

With over 130 acres of woodland, gardens and parkland the Chewton Glen estate now extends to the edge of the New Forest National Park and down to the Solent coastline.

In 1990 The Spa was opened, the first of its kind in the UK. The spa currently boasts 12 treatment rooms, a 17 metre swimming pool, fitness suite, dance studio, sauna and steam rooms, Nail Studio, hydrotherapy pool and hot tub.

The border between Dorset and Hampshire follows the path of the stream that flows through the Chewton Bunny, a valley in the grounds of Chewton Glen.

We have more than 50 working bee hives of very well behaved bees, cared for by Bee Keeper, Rob Oliver and Estate Manager, Darren Venables.

A fabulous array of vegetables, fruit, herbs and edible flowers are harvested each year from the Walled Kitchen Garden and Nursery, we even have a team of volunteers now helping our gardeners sowing seeds and potting up.

With miles of stunning coastline just minutes walk from the hotel, you can enjoy plenty of water based activities.

POD Charging Point with a universal charging socket. Guests to provide their own charging cable, the charging point offers a 3.7kw - 15 Miles of range per hour of charge.

Arriving at Chewton Glen through its grand, double gates, proceeding up a long, winding drive flanked by well-manicured New Forest foliage before reaching the hotel’s entrance complete with fountain roundabout and more potted shrubbery than you can shake a stick at, you feel a little like you’ve booked in at Jurassic Park.

Sure, it’s a sedate, luxury Jurassic Park, set in quintessentially British countryside and without the genetically created dinosaurs, but the elements of a controlled-yet-beautiful wilderness, seemingly miles away from real, everyday civilisation, give the same buzz Spielberg sought to create.

This sense is enhanced as my girlfriend and I are taken by buggy deeper into the surrounding trees in search of our treehouse accommodation. Built in 2012 at a cost of £7 million, the array of top-end rooms and suites line up on stilts a few minutes’ ride to the north of the hotel’s 130-acre grounds.

We’re in a loft suite. We walk across a small bridge to reach our environmentally friendly “treehouse” – essentially a stand-alone apartment. Though a five-star hotel with all the trimmings is a couple of hundred metres away, we feel completely isolated – in a good way. We head straight for the balcony to gaze out over the untouched scrubland turning orange and red in the twilight before us. Staggering.

• Five amazing treehouse hotels

The suite – lounge, double room with en-suite free-standing bath and walk-in shower, and twin loft for kids complete with toys, games and PlayStation 2 – is simple and elegant. It’s homely too – with a woodburner, sofa, table and chairs, television with Sky, iPod dock and enough light-dimming settings to have you believe the treehouse doubles as the deck of a spaceship.

The coffee table has a selection of teas, pastries and a fruit bowl should you need sustenance on arrival; the small kitchen area has a coffee machine, microwave, dishwasher and fridge stocked with juices, milk and half bottle of Tattinger champagne. Why not make yourself a treehouse hot chocolate? It’s the little things that give the feeling you are well and truly looked after.

• The best hotels in the New Forest

We settle in quickly, knowing we can choose from a number of walks about the grounds or even head down to the beach 25 minutes away. Instead we take in the beauty of the New Forest from the comfort of our sofa and then, later, from the hot tub on the balcony.
